Sadly, over the course of the past several years, substance abuse and dependence have become major health-related concerns throughout the state of Maine. Every year, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services produces a Statewide Epidemiology Outcome Report. The 2019 report covers the current substance abuse trends throughout the state of Maine. Alcohol remains the most frequently used chemical substance amongst high school students and young adults. In the year 2017, one out of every four high school students admitted to consuming five or more drinks in a row at least one time during the past month. The highest rates of binge drinking were reported among young adults aged 18 to 25 years old, with one in three reporting that they consumed at least five drinks over a one hour period.
Prescription drug abuse is also common among high school students and Young adults. From 2015 to 2017, the number of high school students that reported abusing a prescription medication at least once over the course of the past month increased from 5 percent to 6 percent. Additionally, 7 percent of 18 to 25 year olds have reported abusing at least one prescription painkiller over the course of the past year.

In Maine, during the year 2018 alone, there were a total of 354 overdose deaths directly linked to chemical substances. While the number of fatalities decreased from 2017 to 2018, the role of fentanyl in overdose-related deaths has continued to increase – fentanyl is now involved in roughly six out of every 10 overdose deaths in the state of Maine.
