The Benefits of Online Telehealth Addiction Treatment for Adolescents

Unfortunately, substance use is not uncommon among teens. According to the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), of those aged 12 to 17, almost 2.2 million individuals had a substance use disorder in the last year. Among this age group and timeframe, 757,000 had an alcohol use disorder and 316,000 had an opioid use disorder.1
While these statistics are troubling, help and hope are available. However, accessible in-person treatment options may be limited due to a host of factors, such as your or your teen’s location, ability to travel, and/or school schedules and activities. Virtual adolescent substance use disorder treatment is a viable solution.
According to research, the efficacy of telehealth services is comparable to that of in-person treatment. For example, a study of patients with substance use disorders (SUDs) conducted between January 2020 and March 2021 found that when treated by various health formats like in-person care, hybrid care, and virtual care, patients revealed no significant differences in:2

  • Continuous abstinence
  • Overall quality of life
  • Financial well-being
  • Psychological well-being
  • Confidence in one’s ability to stay sober

For teens and their families, telehealth offers several benefits, many of which are unique to the adolescent experience.

Accessible Treatment

Virtual and telehealth formats can connect adolescents with specialized addiction treatment services and professionals that may not be available to them locally. It can be particularly advantageous for those with limited transportation options or who live in rural areas where receiving high-quality treatment would require traveling long distances.

Family Involvement

Family involvement is a vital component of teen addiction treatment, and virtual formats can provide family therapy sessions even when members are in different locations. Plus, their virtual formats often better accommodate busy schedules related to work and family obligations. This can increase treatment effectiveness and help support the adolescent’s path to recovery. These platforms can also offer resources for families to improve their understanding of addiction and teach them how to best support their loved ones.

No Disruption in Academics & Extracurricular Activities

Online treatment is typically more flexible than in-person approaches, allowing adolescents to receive the help they need with minimal disruption to their daily schedules. This means that they can continue with their academic endeavors, engage in other school activities, and maintain a sense of normalcy and routine while they receive treatment.

Tailored Behavioral Treatment Plans for Substance Use & Mental Health for Teens

Like in-person formats, virtual platforms provide personalized treatment plans that can address both substance misuse and mental health conditions. In doing so, families can be sure that their teen’s unique needs, goals, and preferences are met. Also, they will be provided with the tools they need to confront and overcome their challenges, thereby promoting the effectiveness of treatment and sustained recovery.

Accessible Expert Therapists & Counselors for Adolescents

Virtual treatment through Pine Tree Recovery Center is facilitated by therapists and counselors who specialize in addiction and behavioral health conditions. Each professional is licensed, experienced, and qualified to work in their area of expertise. They carefully craft personalized treatment plans and use evidence-based strategies to help adolescents overcome their challenges and improve their overall health. These professionals have worked extensively one-on-one with individuals in various formats, and they provide the same care and commitment to our virtual guests as they do to their in-person clients.

Our virtual treatment program uses AI technology alongside licensed professionals. Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) sessions are held four times a week in 3-hour sessions, and the program includes weekly individual sessions for tailoring treatment plans and setting goals. Additionally, it includes a weekly family support group and aftercare planning.
Our commitment to our clients and their families is to ensure that practical help is accessible to anyone struggling with substance misuse, regardless of their circumstances.

Initially, we ask some basic questions to get a better understanding of your teen’s circumstances. We might ask questions like:

  • “What type of substances are being used?”
  • “Have you or your loved one previously been through the treatment process?”
  • “What are some of the goals you hope to accomplish during treatment?”

This is the time to ask questions to explore treatment options, better understand the process, etc. Our treatment advisors will offer helpful advice in an understanding and nonjudgmental way while maintaining strict confidentiality. If you determine that Pine Tree Recovery Center may be a good fit for your teen, we begin the transition to the pre-assessment stage of the admissions process.

Pre-Assessment

Our treatment advisors provide a complimentary, in-depth pre-assessment for you or your teen to understand any behavioral health concerns and offer the best possible path forward.
We offer a pre-admission clinical assessment for any individual who is considering treatment with Guardian Recovery. During the pre-admission phone call, our treatment advisors speak with the prospective client or their loved one to learn more about their needs and ensure that Pine Tree Recovery Center is the best fit for them.
Your treatment advisor will ask for information that may include:

  • The client’s history
  • Family history
  • Physical and psychological health history
  • Current medications
  • Treatment history

When the pre-assessment is complete, it is sent to our medical and clinical teams to review. From there, we begin developing a customized treatment plan.
