Pine Tree Recovery Center
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Our intensive outpatient treatment program (IOP) is a flexible form of addiction treatment that allows individuals to go to work, attend school, engage in their day-to-day lives and live at home or at sober living while simultaneously participating in our treatment program. Individuals attend treatment four days a week (Monday-Thursday), for three hours per day. We have three different tracks to accommodate different schedules, including a morning track (from 9am-12pm), an afternoon track (from 1pm-4pm) and an evening track (from 6pm to 9pm). Clients attend IOP for approximately eight weeks. The program utilizes a wide variety of therapeutic practices, 12-Step recovery and holistic treatment methods to address addiction multi-dimensionally. The program is designed to address the physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual causes and consequences of addiction. We provide meals, transportation and case management services to our IOP clients. For more information about our IOP program at Pine Tree, read on or contact us at any time.
Why Should I Consider an IOP Program After Detox?
While medical detox is an important first step toward recovery, it is only the first step. Medical detox allows individuals to safely and comfortably withdraw from drugs and alcohol under the careful supervision of medical professionals. In our detox program, we utilize medication assisted treatment, therapy and holistic practices in a homestyle setting to help ease individuals into sobriety. An individual leaves detox physically stabilized and hopefully feeling a lot better.
However, they have not solved any of the root causes or conditions that led to their addiction, nor have they learned the coping mechanisms necessary for facing life sober long-term. They have not built a sober support network that will help them when they face challenges. They have not healed the emotional wounds of the past or addressed past traumas that could trip them up in sobriety. They have not repaired their relationships or learned tools for preventing relapse. Nor have their brains had enough time to re-wire. Addiction chemically alters the neural networks of the brain. These neural pathways typically take a minimum of 90 days to re-wire. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), any treatment program shorter than 90 days can be considered ineffective. All of these aspects of addiction treatment happen after detox, either in a residential inpatient setting, or in an intensive outpatient program.
While detox is a critical beginning, an individual needs to transition into a longer-term treatment program that can address addiction’s emotional, mental, social and spiritual implications. It is in ongoing treatment following detox that individuals really learn how to live life sober.
We Are Here For You
Our IOP Treatment Approach
We believe that in order to recover individuals need to heal holistically. This means addiction needs to be addressed at the physical, emotional, mental, physical and social levels. In order to target each of these areas, we have organized our program in to three primary modules. Combined, these modules create an evidence-based, comprehensive treatment program.
Three Main Treatment Modules:
#1: 12-Step Implementation in Daily Life Practice
The 12-Steps are one of the most well-known treatment methodologies for addiction recovery. Why? Because the 12-Steps have been extensively studied and shown to be highly effective at producing long-term sobriety. According to a comprehensive study conducted by a Stanford School of Medicine researcher and his collaborators, the 12-Steps are the “most effective path to abstinence” currently known. For the study, the Stanford researchers evaluated 35 previously conducted studies involving the work of 145 scientists and the outcomes of 10,080 participants. Combining this collection of research, Keith Humphreys, PhD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, and his fellow investigators determined that the 12-Step methodology was nearly always found to be more effective than psychotherapy alone in achieving abstinence.
The 12 Steps are a program of action that hopefully leads to personal transformation. The goal of the 12-Steps is to help an individual change their ideas, attitudes, beliefs and actions in order to become more selfless, loving and sober individuals.
Behind each step is a key principle for living. The 12-Step principles include:
- Honesty
- Hope
- Surrender
- Courage
- Integrity
- Willingness
- Humility
- Love
- Responsibility
- Discipline
- Awareness
- Service.
Our clients actively work the 12-Steps and learn how to apply the principles to their daily lives. They also learn how to participate in a 12-Step community of their choosing. During this module clients participate in 12-Step workshops, learn to create social connections and build a recovery community, discover the importance of being of service to others and learn skills to prevent relapse.
Our Drug & Alcohol Detox Services Include
#2: Clinical Module
This module focuses on intensive therapy work. Clients participate in group, individual and family therapy. Our groups in this module are often split into men’s groups and women’s groups in order to target gender-specific issues and create environments conducive to healing.
Our professional therapists are highly experienced and trained in a variety of therapeutic methods including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, trauma therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Combined these therapeutic tools give clients a wide range of coping mechanisms for dealing with the root causes and subsequent consequences of addiction. These skills help regulate emotions, decrease impulsivity, improve relationships, reduce stress and heal old wounds.
In this module we also address co-occurring mental health disorders. Mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety and bi-polar disorder, commonly co-occur with addiction. Addiction worsens symptoms of mental health disorders; and mental health disorders often lead to self-medication and substance abuse. Both need to be addressed if a person stands the best chance at achieving long-term recovery.
#3: Health & Wellness Module
Our health and wellness module focuses on the eight domains of wellness. The eight domains of wellness include occupational, emotional, spiritual, environmental, financial, physical, social, and intellectual wellness. The goal of this module is to seek the highest level of wellness in all eight areas of an individual’s life. If any one area is particularly challenging, it can deeply affect a person’s overall wellness. We teach the life skills necessary for improving wellness in all areas. In this module we also utilize holistic therapies including guided breathwork, yoga, reiki (energy healing), mindfulness and meditation.

Our Location
Our IOP programs take place at the same facility as our medical detox program in Portland, Maine. Our medical detox unit is on the first floor, while our IOP program takes place on the second floor. Our IOP group rooms accommodate roughly 12 people per group. Our facility is located on Bishop Street just minutes from the Maine coast. Our facility is conveniently located close to numerous sober living homes.
Sober Living
Many of our clients choose to live in a sober residence near by as they participate in our IOP program. Sober living gives clients added accountability, community, safety and companionship. Sober living can also remove individuals from the distractions, stress and risk factors often associated with living at home. This allows them to focus on their recovery for a period of time before transitioning back into their normal living accommodations. We have positive relationships with several of the area’s sober living homes. If you’d like to be put in contact with one of them, reach out to us anytime.
