Medical detox is a supervised process designed to help those struggling with drug or alcohol misuse safely withdraw from addictive substances. It provides individuals with a safe environment where they are monitored 24/7 by health professionals and medications can be administered to improve comfort and reduce the likelihood of severe or potentially lethal complications.

At Pine Tree Recovery, we’re committed to providing the most up-to-date, evidence-based treatment for individuals experiencing substance misuse and other behavioral health issues in Portland, Maine. Our comprehensive programs consist of multiple levels of care, including medical detox, residential treatment, outpatient programs, an intensive outpatient program, virtual telehealth services, and more. In doing so, we ensure our clients are provided with the clinical care and support they need to heal and thrive in recovery.

What Our Detox Program Looks Like at Pine Tree Recovery Center

During our medical detox programs, we provide various treatments that help individuals safely and comfortably clear substances from their bodies. Our team of professionals, which includes health providers, therapists, and counselors, provides clinical and emotional support throughout the process. The length of treatment depends on factors such as the client’s history of substance use, underlying mental health conditions, and history of addiction.

The three main steps of detox include:

  • Evaluation — When you arrive at our facility, we perform a thorough assessment to gather as much information about your specific circumstances as possible, such as your overall health status, experiences with substances, personal and family history of addiction, and your personal goals for treatment. From here, we develop a detoxification plan most appropriate for your unique situation.
  • Stabilization — After the evaluation, our team of healthcare professionals uses various protocols and administers medications as needed to reduce unpleasant effects and prevent potentially dangerous withdrawal symptoms. We monitor our clients 24/7 and help them remain as comfortable as possible until they are physically stabilized.
  • Preparation — When withdrawal symptoms have subsided, we prepare our clients for the next stage in their recovery. While in detox, clients participate in group therapy sessions, educational workshops, and voluntary recovery meetings, and they meet with a case manager to strategically plan their next steps.

How Is a Detox Program Different from Other Rehab Programs We Offer in Portland, ME?

Medical detox is just the first step in the recovery process, which depending on the person’s needs and preferences, can encompass a wide range of programs, therapies, and services. Those who have completed detox are encouraged to transition into another level of care that will provide them with the structure and intensity of treatment most appropriate for their unique circumstances.

Residential Addiction Treatment Program

Our residential (inpatient) rehab programs offer the highest level of care, providing a safe and secure space around the clock for individuals to recover from addiction. Residential treatment includes a wide range of methodologies, such as individual and group therapy, family counseling, relapse prevention training, and recreational and experiential therapies. Clients are provided with a supportive community of peers who are going through similar issues and can share insight and experiences.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

PHP is similar to residential treatment regarding the therapies, services, and activities it offers, except clients go home in the evenings instead of staying at a facility overnight. It’s a great step-down option for those who’ve completed residential rehab and no longer require 24/7 care, or for those who need more structure and intensive treatment than what outpatient programs typically provide.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

IOP is a relatively structured but flexible program that provides clients with behavioral health services, such as medication management, and many of the same therapies and activities as residential treatment. However, instead of staying at a facility 24/7, they participate a few hours per day 3–5 days per week. This format may be appropriate for those with less severe addictions, those who require significant flexibility in their schedule, or those who’ve already completed a higher level of care.

Virtual Rehab & Treatment

Our virtual treatment offers a modern approach designed to provide clients a fully immersive treatment experience comparable to in-person care. Our online platform integrates a continuum of care into a virtual access portal in a way that feels more like attending in-person treatment than simply visiting a website.

With today’s ever-evolving demands, we have designed our virtual with flexibility and accessibility in mind. This approach allows clients to receive the care they deserve without the barriers to access inherent to traditional forms of treatment, such as having to endure lengthy commutes and significant time away from work, family, and other responsibilities. It also offers unparalleled privacy, which can reduce or eliminate the stigma of addiction and treatment and ultimately motivate individuals to receive the support they deserve.

Substance Use Disorders We Treat

Our NH drug and alcohol detox and treatment programs have been designed to address a wide range of addictions, such as those associated with alcohol, prescription drugs, opioids, stimulants, benzodiazepines (benzos), and synthetic substances.

Alcohol Detox

Alcohol is one of the few substances that can lead to life-threatening symptoms during withdrawal. Delirium tremens (DTs) is a severe condition characterized by extreme disorientation, tremors, hallucinations, seizures, and psychosis that can develop following a period of extended or excessive drinking. DTs are associated with a significant mortality rate of approximately 37% when left untreated.1

Fortunately, the odds of surviving this condition dramatically increase under medical detox, where clinical professionals administer medication and closely monitor individuals for complications. Moreover, people who are at risk of severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms should not attempt to quit drinking without medical supervision and support.

Prescription Drug Detox

Like heroin and fentanyl, extended use of prescription opioids often requires medical detox to ensure safety and comfort. Also, if left untreated, the symptoms associated with benzodiazepine withdrawal can be dangerous and potentially lethal. Detoxing from prescription stimulants, such as those prescribed to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), can be highly unpleasant and often lead to relapse. At Pine Tree Recovery Center, we are equipped to effectively treat the adverse symptoms associated with prescription drug withdrawal, regardless of the type of medications being misused.

Opioid Detox

Prescription opioids are painkillers such as hydrocodone and oxycodone prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain. The longer they are used, the greater the potential for dependence and withdrawal symptoms upon cessation. Illicit opioids, such as heroin and fentanyl, are powerful central nervous system depressants, and due to the intensity of their withdrawal effects, those struggling to stop on their own often relapse prior to completing the withdrawal process.

To ensure the safety of detox and minimize the chance of relapse, it’s crucial for individuals detoxing from opioids to enlist the help of professionals at a licensed and accredited rehab center, such as Pine Tree Recovery Center. Our healthcare professionals can administer medications to alleviate the many intense symptoms of opioid withdrawal, making the detox process as comfortable as possible.

Stimulant Detox

Prescription stimulants, such as amphetamine (Adderall, Vyvanse) and methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta), are primarily used to treat ADHD but are sometimes prescribed off-label to treat narcolepsy, eating disorders, depression, and anxiety.2 The most common illicitly used and obtained stimulants are methamphetamine and cocaine.

Abruptly cutting back or stopping the use of either prescription or illicit stimulants can cause a range of mild to severe withdrawal effects, including depression, anxiety, extreme fatigue and lethargy, and many other short-term rebound cognitive impairments. While these effects are not life-threatening, as with opioid withdrawal, they can be miserable enough to compel an individual to resume use. Undergoing stimulant detox in a clinical setting can ease these symptoms and reduce the chances of relapse.

Benzodiazepine Detox

Benzodiazepines (benzos) are prescribed primarily to treat acute symptoms associated with anxiety or panic disorders. Common benzos include alprazolam (Xanax) and diazepam (Valium).

Benzo withdrawal, as with alcohol, can be life-threatening without medical monitoring and assistance, and it therefore requires the supervision of healthcare professionals. Suddenly discontinuing the use of benzos can result in nausea and vomiting, extreme rebound anxiety and panic attacks, extreme restlessness, confusion, tremors, seizures, and more. Because of the inherent danger, it is vital to only attempt to detox from benzos under the care of professionals.

Synthetic Drug Detox

“Synthetic drugs” is a catch-all term that refers to a variety of substances. Most often synthetic drugs are substances manufactured in clandestine labs with the intent of mimicking the effects of controlled substances. They are often labeled “research chemicals” or “herbal incense” and “not for human consumption” to evade government regulation. These drugs include synthetic cannabinoids (K2/Spice), Ecstasy/Molly, cathinone/bath salts, LSD, DMT, and many more.3

The lack of regulation and variety of synthetic drugs makes the safety of their effects and withdrawal symptoms unpredictable. Clinical supervision during detox from a synthetic drug is important to ensure safety.
